I’ve always loved this song.
Tracy Chapman - “Fast Car” (1988)
Listening to the lyrics of “Fast Car” is like falling into a deep hole. Sometimes hopping on a fast car to anywhere à la Springsteen doesn’t really solve anything and the glimpse of a better life makes it even harder to accept the reality that you’re gonna live the same poor life your parents lived. The bleak video perfectly embodies the feelings of lost hope and bitter acceptance.
This record could also be seen as an intro to the socially conscious 1990s female singer-songwriter movement.
